The rate-limiting step is unimolecular, with A as the sole reactant. C+ D A B If [A] and [B] are both 0.105 M, then the rate of reaction is 0.0040 M/s. (a) What is the rate of the reaction if[A] is doubled? Number (b) Starting with the original concentrations, what is the rate of the reaction if [B] is doubled? Number (c) Starting with the original concentrations, what is the rate of the reaction if [A] and [Bl are both increased by a factor of three? Explanation / Answer

Rate = k[A]

I.e. rate is independent of [B] as A is the sole reactant in the rate determining step.

Therefore:
(a) if the conc. Of A is doubled, the rate will also be doubled, i.e. 0.0080 M/s

(b) As rate is independent of B, the rate will be unchanged on doubling B.
That is rate will remain 0.0040 M/s.

(c) by similar argument as above, rate will become three times i.e. 0.0120 M/s.
