Question

In an experiment, 10.0 grams of ice that is intially at -10.0 degree celcius is added to 200 grams of distilled water in a calorimeter. Before the ice was added the temperature of the distilled water was 22.0 degree celcius. After all the ice had melted, the temperature of the distilled water was 17.0 degree celcius.

A. Using these results and the specific heat values for water and ice and calculate delta H fus for ice.

B. Now, given that the delta H fus for water is 6.02 kj/mol, calculate the percent error.

Explanation / Answer

A)

Given:

Mass of ice = 10.0 g

Initial temperature of ice = -10.0 deg C

Mass of distilled water = 200 g

Initial temperature of water = 22.0 deg C

Final temperature of water = 17.0 deg C

Solution:

Ice absorbs the heat from water and forms water at 0 degree C. Also water at 0 degree C absorbs heat and go the final temperature 17.0 degree C.

This amount of heat is given by 200 g water.

We can show in the mathematical form.

qice + q1water= -q2water
