Question
How do the trees in panel a above differ from each-other from the perspective of a monkey? for how long should a monkey forage in each tree before leaving? be specific.
How do the fruit trees in panel b above differ from each-other from the perspective of a monkey? for how long should a monkey forage in each tree before leaving? be specific.
Question 4. Monkeys will often actively search for fruit trees, feeding on the fruit within a tree until it is mostly gone and then leaving to look for another tree in which to feed. Optimal foraging theory makes predictions about which behaviors should be favored by natural selection. Consider the following figure Tree 1 Tree 2 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 Time (T) Tree 1 Tree 2 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45Explanation / Answer
Optimal Foraging:
It predicts the animal behaviour when searching for food.Although it takes food it provides animal with energy,but when it is searching and acquiring food it requires both energy and time.
Panel(a):
a.) Panel (a) defines the difference between the tree 1 and tree 2 with respective to monkey:
The energy level of monkey on the tree one is less compared to tree two because food quality and availability do not appear on the trees so it results in influencing the amount of time.
Tree 1 intial stage is at 0 and the monkey climbs the tree at 10 min and it spends time for 35min.Tree 2 intial stage is at 0 and the monkey climbs the tree at 20 min and it spends time for 35min.In this two cases the monkey energy levels are low.
Panel(b):
b.) The energy level of monkey on the tree one is low compared to tree two because within short period of time i.e; 10-28min means it spend 18min and gained energy is high compared to tree one. On tree one the monkey spent time is 10-38min the total time is 28min but the energy gained is less.
These variations occur due to the monkey spends time on the trees based on the their food habits.
Example: howler monkeys - leaves, Spider Monkeys - fruits&leaves, Squirrel Monkey- fruits
They use fermentation to digest food,monkeys may spend more time foraging in the earliest part of the day, and less time later in the day.
