Question

Consider the following figure depicting survival as a function of body temperature for three species of rocky intertidal snail in the genus Chlorostoma (formerly Tegula):

A. What is the approximate LT50 (lethal temperature at which 50% of individuals die) of each snail species?

B. Based on these results, which of the three species is/are most physiologically resistant to high temperature stress? Where in the intertidal zone would you expect to find this species, relative to the others? Explain.

C. Name two specific physiological differences among snail species that might explain the observed differences in survival at higher temperatures?

D. These data were collected on snails that had been held in the laboratory at summer (warmer) water temperatures prior to the experiment. How would you expect the observed patterns to change if the experimental individuals had instead been held at winter (colder) water temperatures? This would be an example of what phenomenon?

E. Alternatively, how would you expect the observed patterns to change if the experimental individuals had instead been held at even higher than ambient water temperatures (e.g. to simulate expected global warming)? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

A. approximate LT50 for T. funebralis - 43, T. brunnea - 36 and T. montereyi - 36 (extend a horisontal line at 50% survival and allow it to intersect the graph/plot. sketch a vertical line corresponding to this line. the point at which it intersects the x-axis is the LT50.

B. T. funebralis is the most resistant species to high temperature stress. You could expect to find this species in the upper tide zone (upper-mid littoral) where considerable amount of sunlight is avaiable and hence the temrature is warmer as compared to the other (submerged) zones.
