An atmospheric scientist interested in how NO is converted to N02 in urban atmospheres carries out two experiments to measure the rate of this reaction. The data for two experiments is tabulated below. [NO]0 = 963 times 10^-1 M_1 [O_2]_0 = 4.10 times 10^-4 M [NO]_0 = 4.10 times 10^-4 M_1 [O_2]_0 = 9-63 times 10_1 M What is the order of the reaction with respect to Input the value of the rate constant, and select the correct units.

Explanation / Answer

As given in the question the order of reaction with respect to O2 is one and with respect ot NO is two

so rate expression will be

Rate = K [O2] [NO]2

Where

K = rate constant, for third order reaction so the unit will be : (mole-2 L2 sec-1) M-2s-1

Rate of reaction = change in concentration of O2 with respect to time

Rate of reaction = [(4.10 - 2.05) X 10-4 ]/ 3 = K [O2][NO]2

K = rate of reaction / [O2][NO]2 = 0.6833 X 10-4 / 4.10 X (4.10)2 X (10-4)3

K = 0.00991 X 108 = 9.91 X 105 M-2s-1
