Question

How would your percent yield be affected if scraps from an aluminum can were used which is not pure aluminum? Explain. There will be less aluminum containing product than expected, so the % yield will be lowered. What has likely happened if a student reports a percent yield of greater than 100%? Explain. A student forgot to include the 12 H_2O when calculating the formula mass of the compound. How will the calculated percent yield be affected? Explain. Why do we put the solution into an ice-water bath to precipitate the alum crystals?

Explanation / Answer

3. Percentage yield= (experimental yield / theoritical yield) x 100

If a student forget to add 12 H2O to the formal mass of the compound, then the theoritically calculated value will be less than the actual one. If we use the same value for the percentage yield for the calculation usually we will get higher percentage yield.
