1. A 10.00 mL sample of 0.300 M benzoic acid (Ka=6.3*10^-5) is titrated with 0.100 M NaOH. Calculate the pH when:

a) 18.32 mL of base is added. pH=______

b) the equivalence point is reached. pH=______

c) 32.18 mL of base is added. pH=______

Explanation / Answer

1. No of mol of C6h5cooh = 10/1000*0.3 = 0.003 mol

pka = -log(6.3*10^(-5)) = 4.2

a)

No of mol of Base added = 18.32/1000*0.1 = 0.001832 mol

pH = pka + log(salt/base)

   = 4.2 + log(0.001832 / (0.003-0.001832))

   = 4.4

b) equivalence point is reached.

No of mol of acid = base

0.003 mol base is required

volume of base = 0.003/0.1 = 0.03 L = 30 ml

concentration of salt = 0.003 / (30+10) *1000 = 0.075 M

pH = 7+1/2(pka+logC)

= 7+1/2(4.2+log0.075)

= 8.54

c)

excess base = 32.18/1000*0.1 = 0.003218 - 0.003 = 0.000218 mol

concentration = 0.000218/(32.18+10) = 5.16*10^(-3)

pOH = -log(5.16*10^(-3))

   = 2.28
pH = 14-2.28 = 11.72
