Question

Multiple Choice. Place the letter of your choice on the line in front of the number. 1) The equilibrium system P ) The equilibrium system PCIs( g)- PCl3(g) + Ch@) is disturbed by adding chlorine. When equilibrium is reestablished, what can be predicted about the new concentration compared to the original equilibrium concentration? A) [PCls) is larger, [PClk] smaller, [C2] smaller B) [PCls] is larger, [PCls] larger, [Ckl larger C) [PCls) is larger, [PCls] smaller, [Cl2] larger D) [PCIs) is larger, [PCly] larger, [Ch] smaller _ ) Consider the following exothermic reaction: N2(g) + 3H2(g)- 2NH3(g) Which of the following changes would not increase the amount of NH3 produced from given quantities of N2 and H2? A) An increase in P B) An increase in T C) A decrease in V D) Removing some NHs and reestablishing equilibrium 3) An equilibrium mixture of NO(g), O2(g), and NO2(g) is allowed to expand from 1.0 L to 2.0 L at a constant temperature 2NO(g) + O2(g)2NO2(g) Which of the following is correct? A) Concentration of all three gases are unchanged B) The value of Kp would decrease C) The number of moles of NO2 would increase D) The number of moles of O2 would increase

Explanation / Answer

a) for the reaction PCl5 (g) ----> PCl3(g) + Cl2(g)

there is a decrease in number of moles in the reverse reaction. when chlorine is added, there is more number of mole on the product side, so the reaction shifts in a direction of decrease in number of mole . So reactant side.

b) N2 (g) +3H2v (g)---> 2NH3(g)

K= equilibrium consant = [NH3]2/ { [N2] [H2]3

since the reaction is exothermic, an increase in T takes the reaction to endothemic reaction. So less NH3 is formed.

Increase in pressure allows the reaction to proceed in the direction of decrease in number of moles. So more NH3 is formed.

A decrease in Volume decreases the number of moles so the reaction proceeds in a direction where there is an increase in moles.

When NH3 is removed. since the quanties of N2 and H2 are fixed, no further formation taked place.

c)When ever an equilibrium reaction 2NO +O2---> 2NO2 is expnanded fromm 1L to 2 L, Volume is proportional to number of moles and increase in volume increases the increase in moles and hence the reaction proceeds in a direction of decrease in number of moles. So More NO2 is formed.

d) 2SO2+O2---> 2SO3 is a catylitic reaction V2O5 is the catalyst and Catalyst addition increase SO3. Rest of the choices reduce the number of moles of SO3

e)The equilibrium will not shift since CaO is solid.

f) The equilibrium shifts to the right based on LeChatlier principle

g)when I2 is removed, the equilibrium will have to shift to formation of HI.
