Question

The unknowns are each one of the following metals: La, Ba, Mn, and Pb. Calculate the theoretical values of g M/Moles H2 for each of these metals. In each case, the metal chloride product is identified to the right to help you determine the ratio of moles M/moles H2 produced....

(The parenthesis is what is to the right as referred above)

g La/moles H2 (LaCl3 is produced), answer 92

g Ba/moles H2 (BaCl2 is produced),

g Mn/moles H2 (MnCl2 is produced),

g Pb/MolesH2 (PbCl2 is produced)

I know the first answer for La is 92 is correct. But can't seem to do the rest correctly.

Explanation / Answer

I'm assuming the metal is reacted with HCl so the equation is

La + HCl = LaCl3 + H2

balancing

La + 3HCl = LaCl3 + (3/2)H2

So 1 mole of La makes 1.5 moles of H2 = 0.667 moles La / mole H2

Ba + HCl = BaCl2 + H2

balancing

Ba + 2HCl = BaCl2 + H2

So 1 mole of Ba makes 1 moles of H2 = 1 mole Ba / mole H2

Repeat for the last two. Since they are MCl2, they will be the same ratio as for question 2, Ba.
