Question 3 of 10 Map do sapling leaming What is the fraction of association (a) for the following potassium pro ignore activities. The Ka of propanoic acid is 1.34 x10 (a) 6.00 x 10 M K(C2HsCO2) pionate solutions? Number (b) 6.00 x 102 M K(C2HsCo2) Number (c) 6.00 x10M K(C2H,CO2) Number ino
Explanation / Answer
I will tell you how to do part a), and then, using the same procedure of part a) you'll do part b) and c)
First the salt of potassium, without it's ion, it's a base so, calculate the kb:
Kb = 1x10-14 / 1.34x10-5 = 7.46x10-10
The general reaction would be:
r: C2H5CO2- ---------> C2H5CO2H + OH-
all you have to do is an ICE chart and get the value of x, and then calculate alpha.
a) 0.6 M
r: C2H5CO2- ---------> C2H5CO2H + OH-
i: 0.6 0 0
e: 0.6-x x x
7.46x10-10 = x2 / 0.6-x
7.46x10-10 * 0.6 = x2
x = 2.1157x10-5 M
to get alpha: [propanoic acid] / [Propanoate]
alpha = 2.1157x10-5 / 0.6 = 3.52x10-5
Now, use the same procedure for part b) and c) to get alpha.
Hope this helps
