Question
If someone could help me out with these two problems that would be great!
Principles of Chemistry 1 Suppose that your laboratory instructor offered you extra credit to analyze the cautions in a solution that you're told contains only Ba^2+ or Ca^2+. You are given solutions of the six sodium compounds listed in Table 6, and allowed to divide the unknown solution into two test tubes for testing purposes. What test would you perform on the solution in the first tube to determine whether or not the solution contains Ba^2+? Briefly explain. What test would you perform on the solution in the second tube to determine whether or not the solution contains Ca^2+? Briefly explain.Explanation / Answer
a. Test for Ba2+:
Add 1 drop of 1M Na2SO4 to the test tube. An yellow color ppt occurs which confirms the presence of Ba2+ ions since barium sulphate is insoluble.
Ba2+ + Na2SO4 ---------------->2Na+ + BaSO4
b. Test for Ca2+:
Add 1 drop of 1M Na2SO4 to the test tube. CaSO4 is formed.
Ca2+ + Na2SO4 ---------------->2Na+ + CaSO4
1mL of 6 M NaOH (aq) was added to that test tube and it was stirred well. Calcium hydroxide was formed.
CaSO4 + 2 NaOH -------------------> Ca(OH)2 + NaSO4
Ammonium oxalate was added that is Ca(OH)2 and it changes to Calcium oxalate and white precipitate forms.
(NH4)2C2O4 + Ca(OH)2 -----------------> CaC2O4 + 2 NH4OH
