Question
In a laboratory experiment 2 students Independently isolated the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. the students then measured the activity of their own enzyme solutions and thus determined the Vmax and Km's of their preparations. when they compared their result, they noticed that their values of Km were identical but their values of Vmax were radically different. one student argued that the different Vmax values confirmed that they had isolated different forms of the same enzyme. The other student argued that in spite of different Vmax, they had isolated the same form of the enzyme which student was correct. Explain.
Explanation / Answer
For isozymes (different form of the same enzyme ) the Km value varies for different isoforms so the first conclusion is wrong
If there is a competative or non competative substrate inhibition then Vmax may be altered. So though they are sam E Vmax can vary
