Question
A new challenge for wastewater treatment is that the treated effluents are beginning to be used for various beneficial uses, instead of being discharged to a receiving water. For each of the following reuse options, indicate if secondary or advanced treatments is needed and why: Irrigation of a golf course Irrigation of cotton Irrigation of vegetables Cooling water to an electric power plant Discharge to a reservoir uses as a drinking-water supply Dust suppression Discharge to a reservoir used for recreation, including water skiing.Explanation / Answer
Water treatment types needed for,
(1) Irrigation of golf course : secondary tretaments are required for waste water used for irrigation of golf course. The water may contain poliutants that may slowly hamper the growth of plants and enhance the quantitiy of salt in soil. to avoid these a secondary tretament may be sufficient in this case.
(2) Irrigation of cotton : an advanced tretament of waste water used for irrigiation of cotton is required. The poluutants in water destroy the growth of plants over time and increase in salt concentration of soil which could impede drainage.
(3) Irrigation of vegetables : again a consuption product, the treatment of waste water here require advanced methods and the growth of plants needs to be perfect and any damage would directly cause human life hazard.
(4) Cooling water to an electric power plant : waste water for this require secondary treatment as the water can be recycled for the same plant again and thus dissolved impurities other than gases least effect the processes.
(5) Discharge to a reservoir used as a drinking water supply : an advanced tretament of waste water is required as the water which comes out is directly consumed by humans and thus will directly effect the short and long term health of it.
(6) dust suppression : a secondary tretament would be sufficient in this case for the water is not directly taken directly or indirectly by living beings.
(7) discharge to a reservoir used for recreation, including water skiing : an advanced water treatment would be suggested for this waste water. The high content of salt may affect the skin while skiing and thus to avoid this an advanced tretament is required.
