Question
Which test would distinguish the following pairs of compounds? Explain which reagent you would use and what you would observe?
1. butan-1-ol / butan-2-ol
2. 2-methylpropan-1-ol / 2-methylpropan-2-ol
3. propan-1-ol / heptan-1-ol
4. cyclohexanol / cyclohexane
I think 1 is Jones reagent or Lucas. I am really not sure how to find out if it is 10, 20, 30 alcohol, and the last option is just a cyclic alkane so really not too sure on that either or is it just done by sodium or density tests? Does ester formation help matters as well or not?
Explanation / Answer
1) Lucas test (primary and secondary alcohols)
2) Lucas test (primary and tertiary alcohols)
3) by oxidation reactions (KMnO4/H+)
4) test with sodium (cyclohexanol reacts but cyclohexane can't)
