Question

Use a small test tube, four labeled bottles(a, b, c,D) and your basic knowledge of acids and bases,(the neutralization concept and indicator colors)determine the identity of the four bottles a, b, c, and D,and justify your conclusions with a discussion and equations. The four substances are water, indicator-phenolphthalein, which in an acidic solution is colorless or milky but in a basic solution is magenta or dark pink, 0.1 M HCI(aq), and 0.1 M NaOH (aq). Be careful to not get any chemical on you. ALL REACTIONS WILL BE IN THE SAME TEST TUBE. I will get you started: combine some A and B Result___________ If the result is pink or magenta, what does this mean about the two solutions A and B? Continue by adding other solutions to this test tube so that you may arrive at the identity of ALL FOUR SOLUTIONS. Observations, Discussions, and Equations

Explanation / Answer

1) we mix A and B if the resulting solution is pink in color it indicates that phenalpthalene indicator is in baisc solution

so A is NaOH and B is phenalpthalene indicator

phenalpthalene + OH- ----------------------------> phenalpthalene anion + H2O

( pink )

2) mix the B solution to C initially there is no color . upon addition of base drop by drop if the color becomes pink at one point then the solution (C) is acidic solution .

and

now mix D and indicator on addition of first drop of the base if the solution turn pink that is water.
