Question
A voltaic cell is constructed in which the anode is a Zn|Zn2+ half cell and the cathode is a Cd|Cd2+ half cell. The half-cell compartments are connected by a salt bridge.
The anode reaction is:
The cathode reaction is:
The net cell reaction is:
In the external circuit, electrons migrate _____fromto the Zn|Zn2+ electrode _____fromto the Cd|Cd2+ electrode.
In the salt bridge, anions migrate _____fromto the Cd|Cd2+ compartment _____fromto the Zn|Zn2+ compartment.
Explanation / Answer
Zn(s) ----> Zn+2(aq) + 2e- anode
Cd+2(aq) +2e- ------> Cd(s) cathode
-------------------------------------
Zn(s) + Cd+2(aq) -----> Cd(s) + Zn+2(aq) net cell reaction
In the external circuit, electrons migrate from the Zn/Zn+2 electrode to the Cd/Cd+2 electrode.
In the salt bridge anions migrate from the Cd/Cd+2 compartment to the Zn/Zn+2 compartment
I think the second sentence is not clear, in the salt bridge the anions move from the salt bridge to the Zn/Zn+2 compartment, but they move from the bridge, not from the Cd/Cd+2 compartment. I put "from" in my answer because that was the option but i don´t think it is really correct. I hope you understand, let me know if not :)
