Question

Use Le Chateller's principle to predict whether the solubility of PlCl_2 will increase, decrease, or remain the same on addition of each of the following substances: HBr Pt(NO_3)_2 NaCl NH_3 (aq) Calculate the molar solubility of SrF_2 (K_sp = 4.3 Times 10^-9) in: in water 0.010 M NaF_2 Will a precipitate of BaSO_4 (s) form when 100 mL of 4.0 Times 10^-3 M BaCl_2 (aq) and 300 mL of 6.0 Times 10^-4 M Na_2 SO_4 (aq) are mixed? Explain, (K_sp (BaSO_4)=1.1 Times 10^-10) What is the systematic name for each of the following coordination compounds? Cs[FeCl_4] [V(H_2 O)_4 (en)](NO_2)_3 [Co(NH_3)_4 Br(l)]ClO_4 [Mn(en)_2 (NO_3)_2]PO_4 Write the formula for each of the following compounds: Tetraammineplatinum(ll) Nitrite Sodium hexachloroferrate(II) Tris(ethylenediamine)platinum(IV) Sulfate TriamminetricyanoNiobium(IV)Iodide Which of the following complexes can exist as enantiomers (optical is cis-[Fe(NH_3)_4 Cl_2]^+ or [Pt(en)_3]^4+ ? Draw structures of isomers if any. Give the valence bond description in [Pt(en)_3]^4+ knowing that the always create a strong field.

Explanation / Answer

1) PtCl2 ----> Pt+2 + 2 Cl-
On addition of HBr solubility will be same.
On addition of Pt(NO3)2 solubity decreases due to Pt+2 common ion is present in both of them on product side so equilibrium shifts to left side
On addition of NaCl solubility decreases due to Cl- common ion is present in both of them on product side so equilibrium shifts to left side
On addition of NH3 it can form Pt(NH3)4]+2 complex, so the equilibrium shifts to product side i.e., more PtCl2 soluble.

2)SrF2 -----> Sr+2 + 2 F-
a)Ksp = [Sr+2] [F-]
Ksp = (s)*(2s)^2
4.3 * 10^-9 = 4s^3
Solubility s = 1.0244*10^-3
b) in 0.01 NaF
Ksp = [Sr+2] [F-]
Ksp = (s)*(2s + C)^2
4.3 * 10^-9 = (s) * (2s + 0.01)^2
solubility = 4.228 * 10^-5

3)number of moles of BaCl2 = 100*4*10^-3/1000 = 4*10^-4
number of moles of Na2SO4 = 300*6*10^-4/1000 = 1.8*10^-4
ionic product = [Ba+2] [SO4-2]
              = (4*10^-4)*(1.8*10^-4)
              = 7.2 * 10^-8
Kip > Ksp then precipitation will occur.

4)a) Ceasiumtetrafluoroferrate(III)
b)Tetraaquo,ethyleneduamineVanadium(III)nitrite
c)Tetraammonia,Bromo,Idocobalt(III)perchlorate
d)Bisethylenediamine,dinitratoManganese(V)phosphate
