Question
Xenon and fluorine will react to form a binary compound when a mixture of the two gases is heated to a high temperature of 500 deg C in a vessel. A 50.0 mL container is filled with xenon and fluorine, to partial pressures of 2.48 atm and 20.20 atm, respectively and a temperature of 28 deg C. The reaction vessel is heated to 500 deg C and then cooled to a temperature at which F2 is a gas and the xenon fluoride is solid. The remaining F2 gas is transferred to another 50.0 mL container where the pressure at 28 deg C is 15.24 atm. Assuming all of the xenon has reacted, what is the formula of the product?
Explanation / Answer
2.48 atm of Xe reacted
20.20 atm - 15.24 atm = 4.96 atm of F2 reacted
4.96 atm of F2 has twice that = 9.92 moles of F
your ratio of moles is directly proportional to the ratio of atms, when volume & temp are constant...by the formula PV = nRT
so, if the ratio between atms are
Xe = 2.48 atm
F = 9.92 atm
then the ratio between moles are
Xe = 2.48 / 2.48 = 1 mole Xe
F = 9.92 / 2.48 = 4 mole F
So
your answer is
XeF4
