Question
Finding Kp of a reaction given grams of reactant, volume of vessel, and equilibrium pressure of one of the products.
1. Ammonium hydrogen sulfide (NH,HS(s)) is believed to be a component of the cloud banks of Jupiter and Saturn. NH,HS(s) decomposes to ammonia (NH3(g) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S(g) according to the following reversible reaction: NH,HS(s) NH3(g) + H2S(g) At a certain temperature, a 4.00 g sample of NH HS(s) is placed in an evacuated 2.0 L vessel. After equilibrium has been reached, the pressure of NH3(g) in the vessel is 0.350 atm. What is Kp for the reaction at this temperature?Explanation / Answer
Kp = P-NH3 * P-H2S
initially
P-NH3 = 0
P-H2S = 0
in equilibrium
P-NH3 = 0 + x
P-H2S = 0 + x
and we know
P-NH3 = 0 + x = 0.35 so x = 0.35
therefore
P-H2S = 0 + x = 0.35 atm
then
Kp = P-NH3 * P-H2S
Kp = 0.35*0.35 = 0.1225
