SPECIMEN A A tree 70 to 150 (up to 200) feet high, with a straight trunk devoid of branches for a reat height and horizontlly spreading branches arching downward and forming a lat topped crown. Bark thin, smooth, and grayish at first, becoming thick, deeply and irregularly fissured into long plate-like ridges breaking away into loose purple-brown or reddish scales. Needles in bundles of tive, 2-3 1/2 inches long, slender but rigid, dark bluish green. Cones oblong-cylindric, 11 to 20 inches long, pendulous, on stalks from the ends of the higher branches; cone-scales thick, rounded, ending in blunt point, widely spread.
