Question

In 2014. scientists discovered that comp resting regular NaCI in a diamond anvil caused it to rearrange to a new cryiui structure with unusual numbers of sodiums per chlorine atom (i.e., not 1:1). What is the stoichiometric of a the following Nacl compound? (i.e.. is it Nad. NaCI,. NaCI,. Na,CI?J The large spheres In the corners are sodium 1 atoms and all the other spheres are chlorine atoms. This is an unusual compound with two chlorine atoms in each face, at well as a chlorine atom in the center of the unit cell.

Explanation / Answer

One Na atom is shared by 8 unit cells

So total number of Na atoms = 8 x 1/8 = 1

There are 12 Cl atoms on face of cubes where every one is shared by 2 unit cell.

total number of Cl atoms from face = 12 x 1/2 = 6

& 1 Cl atom is at centre

total number of Cl atoms = 6 + 1 =7

So formula of unit cell = NaCl7
