Question

4.)It was important that the flask be completely dry before the unknown liquid was added so that water present would not vaporize when the flask was heated. A typical single drop of liquid water has a volume of approximately 0.05mL.

Assuming the density of water is 1.0g/mL, if 6 drops of water were left in the flask how many moles of water would this be?

** Write answer in decimal form to four decimal places.**

5.)Using your answer for question 4, what volume(in mL) would this amount of water occupy when vaporized at 100oC and 1atm?

** Write answer in decimal fom to one decimal place. No units in answer.**

Explanation / Answer

Given that;

A typical single drop of liquid water has a volume of approximately 0.05mL

Here number of drops = 6 so total volume will be=

0.05mL / 1 drop * 6 drops

=0.3 ml

Density of water = 1.0 g/ ml

Density = mass / volume

Mass = density * volume

Mass = 1.0 g/ ml*0.3 ml

Mass = 0.3 g

Number of moles of water = amount in g/ molar mass

= 0.3 g/ 18.02 g/ mol

=0.0166 mol

0.0166 moles of water would this be there.

5.)Using your answer for question 4, what volume(in mL) would this amount of water occupy when vaporized at 100oC and 1atm?

From ideal gas law:

PV= nRT

V = n RT / P

V= 0.0166 mol * 0.0821 L atm / K mol* 373 K/ 1.0 atm

V=0.5098 L

V= 509.8 ml
