Question

Given the standard free energy changes for the two reactions below,                                         (4)

N2O5 (g)            à            2 NO (g)            +            3/2 O2 (g)                        Go =   59.2 kJ

NO (g)                        +           ½ O2 (g)            à            NO2 (g)                                    Go =   35.6 kJ

            If the two reactions are coupled, determine which direction will be favored for the reaction below.

                        2 NO2 (g)            +            ½ O2 (g)            à            N2O5 (g)

Explanation / Answer

invert (1) so we get N2O5 in the left

G1 = -59.2*-1 = 59.2

multiply (2) by 2 so we cancel NO on the right side of (1)

G2 = 2*-35.6 = -71.2

now

Goverall = G1+G2 = 59.2 -71.2 = -12 kJ
