Question

Due at the beginning of the lab period. Review Laboratory Techniques in Zubrick, 9th ed: Aldol Experiment, GSU Laboratory Manual Note that the techniques referenced in this prelab exercise are all ones that you have used in CHEM 3341 or CHEM 3342. What is the physical state of the product in the Aldol Condensation experiment (solid, liquid, or gas)? If the product were a liquid, what technique would you use to purify it? If the product were a solid, what purification techniques (more than one) could you use? What is a technique that you could use to determine whether your reaction had gone completion?

Explanation / Answer

1) you have alreadt told it's solid

2) if the product was liquid..then used fractional distillation by noting the boilng point of the aldehyde.

3) if it was solid....i think we should use crystallization technique by checkign in which solvent it's little soluble at RT andc ompletely soluble at higher temperrature

4) we can chec of the reaction has gone to completion , by checking TLC of the reaction mixture and comparing it ot the carbonyl compund used for aldol...
