The story: Four months ago two young couples, both from South Dakota, arrived to work for two years in Owen Science Library at Washington State University. Coincidently, both wives delivered babies five days ago. Tragically, yesterday a fire destroyed their apartment building. All four parents and one of the infants perished. You are called in to answer the parents and one of the infants perished. You are called in to answer the question: Who are the parents of the surviving infant named Baby Doe (BD)? Fortunately all eight are alive. Cheek swabs were obtained from all grandparents and from Baby Doe. STR analysis was run and the results shown below. The grandparents are named A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H. A is married to B, C to D, E to F, G to H. To simplify this exercise, only 4 of the 13 standard STR loci are shown. In addition, I have removed values for non-integral repeats (eg., 13.2), a complication we will ignore. Assume no extramarital affairs (which would likely be detected in the course of this DNA analysis). Yes, the hospital would likely have records that could help establish parenthood: however, the hospital computers were attacked by the Russian and all records were lost Deliverable Answer the following four questions (I through IV): I. Who are the grandparents? The answer you send in the email must have the format: WX and YZ where WX and YZ are the two sets of grandparents. (No more and no less.)

Explanation / Answer

Answer. According to STR analysis EF and GH are the grandparents of baby doe. In the STR analysis , these number represent the genotype of each locus. According to genotype, we can identify possible genetic combination of offspring produce by each pair (AB, CD, EF & GH). Than, we will do crosses among offspring to find combination similiar to baby doe. Here, we find that genotype of all the locus of EF and GH grandparents matched with baby doe So we conclude that they are the grandparents of offspring.

When you match all other combination like AB X EF = only locus 2 and 3 match with baby doe

CD X EF = locus 1, 3 and 4 match with baby doe

CD X GH = locus 2 match with baby doe

AB X GH = locus 2, 3 and 4 match

AB X CD = locus 4 match

but in EF X GH = all locus match with baby doe genotype, So, these are the grandparents.

Further cross among this offspring will give you genotypes, when u match this genotype, you will find that all locus of baby doe genotype match with the offspring of EF and GH.
