Question
Aldol Reaction:
Procedure
Place 325 µL of benzaldehyde and 139 µL of cyclopentanone in a 10 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Add 1.0 mL of ethanol, place a magnetic stirbar in the flask, and set the flask on the magnetic stirrer. With the mixture stirring vigorously, add 1.9 mL of 10% NaOH solution. A solid precipitate should form quickly. Let the reaction mixture stir for 2 minutes. Then place the flask in an ice bath. Collect the solid by vacuum filtration with a Hirsch funnel. Wash the crystals with a small amount of cold ethanol. Let your product dry by passing air through the crystals for several minutes. Weigh your product, measure the melting point, and obtain an IR spectrum.
Explanation / Answer
2. With 1 : 2 mole ratio of cyclopentanone to benzaldehyde
3. If all of cyclopentanone is consumed we would need = 2 x 0.999 = 2 mmol of benzaldehyde
Since moles of benzaldehyde is lower than required, this is the limiting reagent.
[NaOH is catalyst]
4. Theoretical yield of reaction = 0.999 mol x 260 g/mol = 259.74 mg
