(c) What would happen to the rate if the concentration of NO were increased by a factor of 1.5?

()The rate of the reaction would increase

()The rate of the reaction would decrease

By what factor would the rate of reaction increase?

[ ]

(d) What is the rate of reaction when [NO] = 0.1 M and [O2] = 0.5 M?
[ ] M/s

Explanation / Answer

a). calculation of rate constant

Rate law

Rate = k [ NO]2[O2]

Lets plug the value of rate and concentrations.

k =( 0.00001042 M/s ) / [( 0.2)2( 2.8) ]

k = 9.30 E -5 L2 mol-2 s-1

Units of rate constant = L2 mol-2 s-1

Since mole / L = M we can convert obtained units in terms of M and s

So the correct answer for b is

M-2s-1

c).

Since in the rate law the rate depends on the concentration of NO so it would definitely increase.

The order with respect to NO is 2. So

Increase in rate would be (1.5)2 = 2.25

d).

we use rate law to answer it.

Rate = k [ NO]2 [ O2]

We calculated k and is used here.

Rate = 9.30 E-5 M-2s-1 x ( 0.1 M ) ^2 x 0.5 M

= 4.65 E-7 M/s
