Question
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrration (NOAA) has measured atmospheric CO2 concentrations at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, for over 50 years. Their measurements show that monthly mean atmospheric CO2 concentrations have been increasing, from about 315 ppm in 1960 to about 392 ppm in August, 2012. Levels were only about 275 ppm prior to the industrial Revolution. Scientists predict that without serious mitigation efforts, CO2 levels may rise to 556 ppm by 2050. Using henry's law determine the aqueous CO2 concentrations (in moles/L) at these four atmospheric CO2 concentrations.
Explanation / Answer
Partial pressure of CO2 (275 ppm )= 10(-3.56)
Henrys law contant = 6.1*10-4 Mol/L.atm
CO2 concentration= 6.1*10-4*10-3.56 atm= 6.1*10-7.56 mol/L
partial pressure of CO2 (315 ppm) =10^(-3.5) atm
concentration = 6.1*10-4* 10-3.5 Mol/L=6.1*10-7.5 mol/L
at 392 ppm concentration= 6.1*10-4*10-3.4=6.1*10-7.4 mol/L
at 556ppm concentration, = 6.1*10-4*10-3.254= 6.1*10-7.254 mol/L
