Question

Task l concerns exploring the thermiochromic behaviour of cobalt alcohol solutions (CoCl2(Alc)2) with methanol (MeOH). You are to prepare CoCl2(EtOH)2/MeOH and CoCl2(iPrOH)2/MeOH in ratios between 2:1 to 4:1 and observe the color at room temperature and when placed on ice. The total volume of each prepared ratio must be 3.00 mL (this needs to be consistent). Construct a table for 4-5 ratios that clearly indicates what will be prepared and the actual volumes of the cobalt alcohol solution and methanol needed to achieve each ratio to give a total volume of 3.00 mL for: 1) CoCl2(EtOH)2/MeOH 2) CoCl2(iPrOH)2/MeOH The table must be well-organized, property titled/labeled and have entries with the correct units and reasonable sig figs.

Explanation / Answer

Solution.

Let V(CoCl2(EtOH)2/MeOH) = V1; V(CoCl2(iPrOH)2/MeOH) = V2;

The total volume is V1+V2 = 3.00 mL;

The number of data rows in a table is 5.

The first is V1 = 2.00 mL; V2 = 1.00 mL;

The last is V1 = 3*4/5 = 2.40 mL; V2 = 3.00-2.40 = 0.60 mL;

The three middle rows should be as follows:

V1 = 2.10 mL; V2 = 0.90 mL;

V1 = 2.20 mL; V2 = 0.80 mL;

V1 = 2.30 mL; V2 = 0.70 mL;

The resulting table is:

V(CoCl2(EtOH)2/MeOH), mL V(CoCl2(iPrOH)2/MeOH), mL 2.00 1.00 2.10 0.90 2.20 0.80 2.30 0.70 2.40 0.60
