Question

reexamine Malthus’ concept and how it applies to human populations.

First, find three nations, each of which exhibit one of the following: positive (increasing), neutral (neither increasing nor decreasing) and negative (decreasing) population growth. Name them and describe the population conditions in each country. With the description, include a copy of the age distribution ‘pyramid’ for each nation. Also, include population biologists’ projections for the future size of the population.

Next, each of these population patterns have pros and cons. For each nation, indicate the pros of their population profile and also list the cons for the type of profile they possess.

Explanation / Answer

Malthus’ concept explained the population growth and food resources availability with duration of time. He explained that the population number is increasing so rapidly. He termed this growth as exponential growth in which population number increases double at a time during a cycle i.e. 2,4,8,16,32 and so on. But in term of food resources they are not growing as per population growth rate they are growing in manner uniform addition pattern i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on. In future a time will came when complete depletion of food resources will occur.

So this concept valid as per the population rate is increasing. Considering this factor the few countries made polices to control the population number.

Some countries initiated the population control program under which the couple will get more benefits and help from government if they will have only one child.

Positive population growth

South Africa

India

Pakistan

Negative Population growth

1. Syria

2. Ukraine

3. South Africa

4. Bulgaria

Neutral population growth

Vatican City

Population pyramid define the number of population of particular range of age of individual.

In India 0-15 year population have equivalent number of males. But the total numbers of females are less in comparison to males.

In Pakistan the age group of 10-14 and 15-19 are higher in number. Before and after this range the population number level decreased.

In Syria the population number is not so much high. The age group 0-14 are higher in number and male female ratio is also almost equal.
