H2S(g) + O2(g) SO2(g) + H2O(g) Determine the maximum number of moles of SO2 produced from 7.0 moles of H2S and 1.0 moles of O2 mol SO2 Submit Show Hints , 7:54 PM 1/29/2016 Search the web and Windows

Explanation / Answer

1st balance the equation:
2 H2S + 3 O2 ---> 2 SO2 + 2 H2O

2 moles of H2S needs 3 moles of O2 to react.
But we have 7 moles of H2S and only 1 mol of O2. Clearly O2 is limiting reagent.

We will use O2 in out further calculations

from equation,

3 mol of O2 produces 2 moles of SO2

So, number of moles of SO2 produced from 1 mol of O2 = 2/3 moles of SO2

Answer: 2/3 = 0.67
