Question
Aluminum is mined as the mineral bauxite, which consists primarily of Al2O3 (alumina). The aluminum can be refined by heating the bauxite to drive off the oxygen: 2 Al2O3(s) Al(s) 3 O2(g) 4 + a. How much aluminum is produced from 3950 kg of Al203? Number Start by looking at the percent composition of 2091 kg Al b. The oxygen produced in part (a) is allowed to react with carbon to produce carbon monoxide. Write a balanced equation describing the reaction of alumina with carbon. [You need not include the states of matter in the balanced equation.] AL, o, +30 2AI+3CO 4Explanation / Answer
Answer – Given , mass of Al2O3 = 3950 kg
Reaction – 2Al2O3(s) -----> 4 Al(s) + 3 O2(g)
First we need to calculate the moles of the Al2O3(s)
Moles of Al2O3(s) = 3.95*106 g / 101.96 g.mol-1
= 38741 moles
From the above balanced reaction –
2 moles of Al2O3(s) = 4 moles of Al
So, 38741 moles of Al2O3(s) = ?
= 77481.4 moles of Al
Mass of Al = 77481.4 moles *26.982 g/mol
= 2.091*106 g
= 2091 kg
Al2O3+ 3C -----> 2Al + 3CO
So from the reaction
1 moles of Al2O3 = 3 moles of CO
So, 38741 moles of Al2O3 =?
= 1.16*105 moles
Mass of CO =1.16*105 moles * 28.01 g/mol
= 3.26*106 g
= 3.26*103 kg
