Ans 1(a): The texture of soil can be determined by the structure of three particles that make up the soil. These are sand, silt and clay. Sand particles are of 0.05-2.00 mm width and can be seen by naked eye. The width of silt particles is 0.002-0.05 mm can be seen by simple microscope while the clay particles are less than 0.002 mm and an electron microscope is needed to see these particles. Soil texture depends on porosity of the soil and porosity depends upon the proportion of each type of particles in soil. This porosity allows the movement of water.

Ans 1(b): Permeability of soil is the ease by which the water moves through the soil. It depends upon the porosity of the soil as the pores are interconnected which able the water to move through the soil.

Ans 1(c): Porosity is the number of pores in the soil which is due to the roots of plants, insects, worm and trapped gasses. Porosity is indirectly related to permeability as it allows the water to move through the soil. Greater the porosity, lesser the permeability.

Ans 1(d): Based on the experiment, the sandy soil is most permeable because it has the lowest porosity (26%) and heavy clay is least permeable as it has highest porosity (58 %). Sand is more permeable because it contains the larger particles and thus pores to the movement of water and exchange of gasses rather than clay particles as clay particles are much smaller with the very small space between them.
