Question
Which of the following statements about isotopes/nuclides and NMR activity are true? (There is more than one true statement.) (4 marks) All nuclides that are NMR active have nuclear spin. Nuclides with even atomic number and even atomic mass number are active in NMR and have spin quantum numbers of 1/2 or multiples of 1/2 (3/2,5/2, 7/2,9/2). Nuclides with odd atomic mass number, such as 1H are active in NMR and have spin quantum number 1 = 1 or multiples of 1 (2, 3,4). All different NMR-active isotopes have unique magnetogyric ratios (gamma) that are different from one another.Explanation / Answer
1st and 4th statements are true.
2nd and 3rd statements are false because
- Nuclides with even atomic number and even atomic mass are inactive in NMR.
Ex: 12C6
- Nuclides with odd atomic mass number are active in NMR but have spin quantum number I=1/2 or multiples of 1/2 (3/2, 5/2....)
Ex: 1H - it is active in NMR and has spin quantum number I=1/2.
