Question
Under certain conditions, biphenyl, C12H10, can be produced by the decomposition of cyclohexane, C6H12 (see below). The table represents part of the data obtained in kinetics experiments.
1.What is the biphenyl concentration at 2.00 s?
2. What is the cyclohexane concentration when the biphenyl concentration is 0.047 M?
3. What is the hydrogen concentration when the biphenyl concentration is 0.056 M?
4. Estimate the instantaneous rate of reaction at 0.5 s, by calculating the average rate between 0.00 and 1.00 s?
2CH 12-C12H10 + 7H2 C12H10 6 12 Time (s) C6H12 (M) C12H10 (M)| H2 (M) 0.00 1.00 2.00 0.200 0.159 0.132Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
1.What is the biphenyl concentration at 2.00 s?
Solution :- at the 2.00 s the concentration of the cyclohexane changes from 0.200 to 0.132
So change in cyclohexane = 0.200 – 0.132 = 0.068 M
So the concetration of the biphenyl = 0.068 / 2 = 0.034 M
2. What is the cyclohexane concentration when the biphenyl concentration is 0.047 M?
Solution :- ratio of the cyclohexane to bephenyl is 2 : 1
So the concentration of the cyclohexane decreased = 0.047 *2 = 0.094 M
So the concetration of the cyclohexane = 0.200 – 0.094 M = 0.106 M
3. What is the hydrogen concentration when the biphenyl concentration is 0.056 M?
Solution :- Ratio of the biphenyl to H2 is 1 : 7
So [H2] = 0.056 M * 7 = 0.399 M
4. Estimate the instantaneous rate of reaction at 0.5 s, by calculating the average rate between 0.00 and 1.00 s?
Solution :- rate beteen the 0.00 to 1
Rate = [0.200 – 0.159/1 = 0.041 M .s-1
So the rate at the 0.5 s = 0.041 M.s-1
