Question
A solution of a compound called potassium acid phthlate (KHP), is prepared by dissolving 3 grams of KHP in 100 mLs of water. This solution is then reacted with exactly 14.47 mLs of a 1.015 M NaOH solution. Assume KHP reacts in a one-to-one ratio with NaOH, calculate the molar mass of KHP. A solution of a compound called potassium acid phthlate (KHP), is prepared by dissolving 3 grams of KHP in 100 mLs of water. This solution is then reacted with exactly 14.47 mLs of a 1.015 M NaOH solution. Assume KHP reacts in a one-to-one ratio with NaOH, calculate the molar mass of KHP.Explanation / Answer
m = 3 g of KHP
V = 100 ml = 0.1 L
then
V = 14.47 ml of NaOH solution is used
M = 1.105 M of NaOh
assume
KHP + NaOH = KNaHP + H2O
therefore
mol of base = mol of acid
V acid = 14.47 ml = 0.01447
mol of base = Molarity * Volume = 1.015*0.01447 = 0.01468705 mol of Acid
then we have 1:1 ratio; 0.01468705 mol of base
We need molar mass so
MW = mass/mol = 3/0.01468705 = 204.2615 g /mol
which isw pretty near to the real value of KHP = 204.22
