Question

dichloromethane (aka methylene chloride) is used for paint stripping and decaffeinating coffee or tea. wza: Answer the following questions from the textbook: 2.1,2.2,2.5,2.10, 2.21,2.22,2.29 and 2a.1: Dichloromethane (aka methylene chloride is used for paint stripping and decaffeinating coffee or tea. It is volatile and in the air can be of concern. The Henry's constant at 25°C is approximately 0.5 M/atm. Its formuia HW2a: Answer the following questions is CH2Cl2. If the gas phase concentration is 1.1x10 mg/m2 what is its concentration in rainwater in mg/?

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

Lets calculate the moles of the CH2Cl2

1.1*106-3 mg * 1 g / 1000 mg = 1.1*10^-6 g / m3

Now lets calculate moles

1.1*106-6 g * 1 mol / 84.9326 g epr mol = 1.295*10^-8 mol

Now lets calculate the partial pressure of the CH2Cl2

1m3 = 1000 L

T= 298 K

PV= nRT

P= nRT/V

    = 1.295*10^-8 mol * 0.08206 L atm per mol K * 298 K / 1000 L

    = 3.167*10^-10 atm

Now lets calculate its concentration in the rain water

C= KH*P

= 0.5 M/ atm * 3.167*10^-10 atm

= 1.58*10^-10 mol / L

Lets convert moles to mass

(1.58*10^-10 mol * 84.9326 g per mol ) *(1000 mg / 1 g) = 1.34*10^-5 mg/ L

So the concentration in rain water is 1.34*10^-5 mg/ L
