Explanation / Answer
There are eight principles of nursing practice and they are listed in the question. The first principle is:
A: Dignity, Humanity & Equality This principle is the starting point of nursing practice. Dignity, humanity and equality are the basic rights of all human beings and the nursing staff should understand this. They should treat every one patient under their care equally without considering their status, caste, creed or race. At times there is compelling discrimination on the basis of monetary status and race. A nurse or a midwife has to go above this and treat every person under her treatment with equal attention and according to the seriousness of the patients' illness. For example, a patient who has undergone a major operation needs more care than a patient who has undergone a minor operation. However, the basic caring needs like administering of medicines or injection should be given equal importance for both. Listening to their complaints with equal attention is the duty of every nurse.
Nutrition is also a major area which should be taken care of. Each patient should be given his diet according to his needs and at the right time. This should be monitored by the nurse under whose treatment the patient is.According to the NMC code, 2015 nurses should prioritise people, that is they should give importance to the person itself and not his status or race.
B: Responsibility & Accountability: This is the second principle of nursing in which the nurse and the nursing staff take responsibility for the care they provide and answer for their own judgement and action. They carry out their activities in a way that has been agreed by the patient's doctor and his family that caters to the needs of the patient.
These duties should also meet their professional requirement and adhere to the law of that region. According to the NMC code 2015, they should practice effectively and preserve both the patient's and their safety. The nurses are also required to promote professionalism and trust.
Responsibility equates to the duty of care. This may be bathing and feeding the patient, giving him/her his medicine in time, taking his feedback and monitoring his/her improvement or deterioration constantly and reporting to the doctor and taking proper action.
A nurse should always keep in mind that she is working for the promotion of a healthy life of the people of her region and therefore work accordingly.
