Question
We did an experiment with a bomb calorimeter. We placed a pellet of benzoic acid which weighed 0.8214g with a wire that weighed 0.0150g. The delta U of benzoic acid is6317.8 cal/g and the delta U of the wire is 1400 cal/g. THe question is
Using the data from the combustion of benzoic acid and the nichrome wire, determine the heat capacity of the system.
I used the equation Cv=deltaU/delta T
I am confident in my answers, I just am confused how I would calculate the error/ Uncertainty in my answer.
Explanation / Answer
Heat generated by combustion of 0.8214 g of benzoic acid = 0.8214*6317.8 = 5189.44 cal
Heat generated by combustion of 0.015 g of wire = 0.015*1400 = 21 cal
Total heat generated = 5210.44 cal
total mass of the system = 0.8364 g
Total change in temperature = 2.14
Thus, heat capacity of the system = 5210.44/(0.8364*2.14) = 2911.03 cal/g/0C
