Question

In this experiment, icon content of a nutritional supplement is analyzed byspectophotometry, and the results are statistically compared to prior class values and published values. The experiment consists of four parts: calibration of the spectrophotometer, preparation of the sample to get the iron ready to analyze, analysis of the sample for iron, and statistical analysis of results. In the spectrophotometry calibration section, a sample of known iron concentration is prepared from ferrous ammonium sulfate. This solution is diluted to use as a working standard, and the working standard is reacted with a reagent that forms a colored complex with the iron The intensity of this colored solution is measured with a spectrophotometer. In the sample preparation section, a known mass of nutritional supplement is extracted for several days with a known volume of mildly acidic water. The acid helps dissolve any iron in the sample, freeing the iron ion from its counter ion. The extract is filtered to separate the liquid (containing the iron) from un dissolved solids. A known volume of the filtrate is reacted with the same reagent used in the calibration step to form the colored iron complex. In the analysis section, the intensity of this colored complex is measured with a spectrophotometer. The results are compared to the results of the colored complex from the working standard, and the concentration of iron in the sample solution is calculated from the experimental data. In the statistical analysis section, the experimental data is statistically compared to prior class data and expected (published) results. Statistical concepts used for this comparison are. average, standard deviation, Grubbs test, standard uncertainty, confidence interval, F-test, and Student two-tailed T-test. Although this experiment introduces visible spectrophotometry (a type of spectroscopy) and Beers law (the relationship between color intensity and analyst concentration), it is also an experiment the gives practice for solutions, dilutions, and statistics. This is a demonstration experiment that is not accuracy and precision.

Explanation / Answer

Abstract :-

Analysis of the Iron content of nutritional suppliment by spectrophotometry .

Procedure :-

----> The spectrophotometer is caliberted with knowm standard Ferrous ammonium sulfate.

------> The intensity of the coloured complex is measured and compared with the standard ferrous ammonium sulfate.

-------> The results are then compared with the class data and published data.

---------> Beer's law and visible spectrometry is observed during the experiment
