B. GoRaysillis carries out ATP synthesis coupled to the flow of electrons through a chain of carriers to some final electron acceptor. The components of the B. GoRaysillis electron transfer chain differ from those we learned about in BCH 4034. The components of the B. GoRaysillis electron transport chain are listed below along with their standard reduction potentials. Place the electron carriers in the order in which they most likely act in carrying electrons. The order was be thermodynamically favorable from left to right. Is it likely that 02 (E^o' = 0.82 volts) is the terminal electron acceptor in B. GoRayillis ? Yes or no? You must properly justify your answer to obtain credit for 11b. What is the theoretical maximum number of ATP molecules that could be synthesized, under standard conditions and pH 7.0, per pair of electrons transferred through this chain of carriers ? Faraday constant, F, is 96.5 kJ/Vmiddot mol AG^o' for ADP + P_i rightarrow ATP is 30.5 kJ/mol.

Explanation / Answer

b. The answer is Yes.

Higher the E° value higher it tries to get reduced. That is because these are reduction potentials. Accepting electrons means reduction. To accept electrons in a series the species should have a progressively increasing reduction potentals. The E° value for O2 is greater than any of the species given here. Therefore it is likely that it acts as the last electron acceptor.
