Question
The heat required for the cracking of ethylene in an oelfins furnance is supplied by burning natural gas which is mostly methane. The combustion of methane is achieved using 20% excess air. One of the methane combustion reactions make carbon dioxide and the other one makes carbon monoxide. The conversion of methane is 85%. Of the methane burned, 90% reacts to make carbon dioxide and the balance reacts to make carbon monoxide. Calculate the molar composition of the product stream.

Explanation / Answer
Imagine we start with 100 moles of methane
out of that 85 moles react.
90% of the burnt methane gives CO2 = (90/100) * 85 = 76.5 moles
so moles of CO2 formed = 76.5 moles
and moles of CO formed = 85 - 76.5 = 8.5 moles
molar composition of product stream = 15% metane, 76.5% CO2 and 8.5% CO
