Mechanism of action of allergy shots:-
1. Pure allergen is injected.
2.Allergen specific IgG antibodies are formed.
3.IgG binds to allergen before it can bind to IgE.
4. No mast cell degranulation occurs.
This is a kind of immunotherapy given to patients who are Type 1 hypersensitive. In this repeated shots of allergen are given to patients (generally injected subcutaneously) ,to which a person is allergic. This is done to increase IgG production and reduce IgE production and thus prevent Ag induced cross-linking of of mast cells and basophills. Thus preventing mast cell degranulation (relaese of vasoactive amines like histamines) and it's effects- vasodilation and smooth muscle contraction.
