Question 7 of 23 Map deb A General Chemistr University Science Books presented by Sapling Lea Donald McQuarrie. Peter A Rock .Ethan Gallogly The quantity of antimony in a sample can be determined by an oxidation-reduction titration with an oxidizing agent. A 5.73-g sample of stibnite, an ore of antimony, is dissolved in hot, concentrated HCI(aq) and passed over a reducing agent so that all the antimony is in the form Sb3 (aq). The Sb3 (aq) is completely oxidized by 25.0 mL of a 0.130 M aqueous solution of KBro3(aq). The unbalanced equation for the reaction is Bro, (aa) sbs (aq) Br (aq) sbs (aq) (unbalanced) Calculate the amount of antimony in the sample and its percentage in the ore Number Number O Previous Give Up & View Solution Check Answer Next Ext 9 Hint

Explanation / Answer

Balanced reaction:-

BrO3-(aq) + 3Sb3+(aq) + 6H+ ------> Br-(aq) + 3Sb5+(aq) + 3H2O(l)

Moles of KBrO3 used = molarity*volume of solution in litres = 0.13*0.025 = 0.00325

Thus, moles of Sb3+ in the sample = 3*moles of KBrO3 = 0.00975

Mass of antimony in the sample = moles*molar mass = 0.00975*121.76 = 1.187 g

% age of antimony = (mass of antimony/mass of sample)*100 = (1.187/5.73)*100 = 20.72 %
