In the last 20 years, there has been a lot of controversy over the use of anabolic androgen steroids in athletes to boost muscle mass and enhance athletic performance (think baseball). Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabolic_steroid to read about the mechanism of action of these hormones. Do you think we ought to ban the use of these drugs in amateur athletes? Does your answer change if the question is asked about professional athletes (people who are being paid to do their sport)? AAS ( anabolic androgenic steroids ) are drugs they increase the protein mass in the cells especially in the skeletal muscles, the major side effects of these drugs on plolonged use are  harmful changes in cholesterol levels (increased low-density lipoprotein and decreased high-density lipoprotein), acne, high blood pressure, liver damage (mainly with most oral AAS), and dangerous changes in the structure of the left ventricle of the heart. Conditions pertaining to hormonal imbalances such as gynecomastia and testicular size reduction may also be caused by AAS. so according to my view ban the use of these drugs even in amateur athletes is absolutely right because the personn might be an amateur athlete or professional athlete but the general physiology of drugs is common in their bodies so use of these drugs there is lots of complictions so better to avoid these drugs.increasing the LDL(low density level ) and decreasing the HDL lipoprotein concentration in the blood leads to formation of atherosclerosis ( blood clot ) .
