Need Help with Question 1 and 2!!!

A.Description and Hypothesis Formulation

We have collected invertebrates from 3 different types of environments in Allen, Texas. These areas areclosely spaced so you might expect them to be very similar in environmental conditions, but large differences have been introduced by human activity. This human activity causes a change in environmental conditions that often leads to pronounced changes in the ecosystem. We often refer to these changes as disturbance. Each of the sites you are examining today has different levels of human induced disturbance. Site one is a wooded area withlayers of leaf litter covered by grasses and herbaceous growth, a layer of shrubs, and finally a layer of tall trees. The second site is a monoculture of grass developed and maintained for a golf course, and the third is aconstruction site in which almost all plant life has been recently removed. Maps of these areas as well as the results of invertebrate sampling at these sites are found in the lab materials on your table. In order to estimate thebiodiversity of each area you will need to count the number of each type of invertebrate that is represented in the sample. In order to identify the group from which each invertebrate comes, you will use the Woodland Name Trail dichotomous key, located on your lab table. First, before we look at our samples, we will try to decide why there would be a difference in insectdiversity between sample sites. In order to do this, we have to decide what effect we want to look at and also what we think the cause might be.Later we will look at the actual data and see if our guess looks correct!

Sample Sites:

Wooded Area

Golf Course

Construction Site

1.

Which site from the above do you expect to have the highest insect diversity, next highest, least?

The question is WHY would each site have different levels of insect diversity? We call our proposed cause the independent variable and our proposed effect the dependent variable.

2. State your independent variable and dependent variable below:

We also want to propose the hypothesis we will test. The hypothesis is the statement of the relationship

between the independent and dependent variable. We want to write two statements that contradict each other, a

null hypothesis (Ho) that says there is no relationship between the independent and dependent variable, and an

alternative hypothesis (Ha) that says there is a relationship between the two variables. That is, the alternative

hypothesis says that our proposed cause really does cause the effect we are studying.

3.State your null and alternative hypothesis below:

Explanation / Answer

1. Habitat is a natural environment where the plant, animal or an organism lives. Among the given sample sites the highest insect diversity is observed in Wooden area followed by golf course and then construction site.

Animals are adapted to live in a particular habitat where their needs are meet so the insects show there habitat preferance in wooden area where they live with less predation risk and could acquire food easily. Almost 97% of insects live on land as it is rich in biotic and abiotic resources. As the wooden area has the litter layer where most of the insects can feed on organic matter and smaller organisms and also have favourable environmental conditions to survive. Site one also has shrubs and trees whereinsects like bees can easily find its preffered food of flowers. Whereas in other sites because of human induced disturbance the survival of insects is tough due to physiological limitations.

So the habitat preferance is as follows;

Wooded Area > Golf Course > Construction site.

2. The Independent variable is Human Induced Disturbance and the dependent variable is Insect Diversity.

Hypothesis is The Human activity strongly effects the existence of insects in the ecosystem
