Question
You are given an unknown plant species to identify, but unfortunately you are not given a whole specimen so you may not see some of the key structural features that would help you more quickly figure out the type of plant. You can tell that it has tube-like structures, almost like straws, running through the stems and throughout the plant, that seem to have water and other substances inside them. Clearly explain your line of reasoning about what types of plants you can rule out. In addition, also explain what you would look for specifically in the plant to help you make a decision on its identity. (use proper vocab: vascular, seedless, stigma, etc)
Explanation / Answer
The tube like structures running through the stems and throughout the plant which contains water inside them must be its vascular structures, xylem and phloem. When vascular structures are seen, we can rule out bryophytes and algae. Vascular plants can be further characterised by different mode of reproduction as ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Ferns reproduce by formation of spores, gymnosperms reproduce by seeds that are present inside cones. Angisperms bear fruits and flowers that contain seeds.
