Question

Which of the following electron configuration is NOT possible? 29. Water is: (a) a polar compound (b) an ionic compound (c) a non--polar compound (d) a coordinate covalent compound (e) linear in shape 30. If enthaply change for a certain process is -32 kj/mol the prcess is (a) exothemic and heat will be absorbed (b) exothermic and heat will be released (c) endothermic and heat will be absorbed (d) endothemic and heat will be released (e) no heat will be absorbed or released 31. Using the following data, determine the heat of combustion of 1 mole of ethylene, C_2H_4. CaH_a(g) + 3 O_2(g) rightarrow 2 CO_2(g) + 2H_2O(I) (a) 1306.5 KJ (b) -1411.1 kj (c) -1306.6 kJ (d) 1411.1 kJ (e) -731.47 kJ 32. Which of the following sets of quantum numbers is not permissible? 33. What volume of alcohol (density 0.800 a/ml) is needed to obtain 64 g of alcohol? (a) 100 ml (b) 320 ml (c) 400 ml (d) 256 ml (e) 80 ml 34. Which of the following orbitla diagrams is impossible according to the Pauli exclusion principle? 35. Which of the following compounds contains both ionic and convalent bonds? (a) NO_2 (b) KNO_3 (c) HF (d) BF_3 (e) SnCI_4 36. According to the bulding-up () principle, which of the following orbitals will be filled first? (a) 5p (b) 5d (c) 5s (d) 4d (e) 4t

Explanation / Answer

Answer – 28) We are given the electronic configuration and we need to choose one which is not possible. We know the Pauli's Exclusion principle and it is state that no two electrons can have the same four electronic quantum numbers. We know the electrons are filled in the atom in a particular arrangement of the suborbital. So the electrons are filled first in the lowest energy orbital then it filled by increasing the energy.

General electronic configuration – 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10……

According this general electronic configuration, the electronic configuration given in the option C is not possible, since there is first need to complete the 2p orbital and p orbital contain 6 electrons, but there are only 4 and it is filled incompletely. so answer is – option C) 1s2 2s2 2p4 3s2

29) We are given the water and we know water is the polar molecule and universal solvent. The shape of the water is bent, so this molecule is polar in nature and it has covalent bonding, since both O and H in the water are nonmetals. So answer for this one is a) a polar compound.

30) We know when the change in enthalpy is positive then the reaction is endothermic and when it is negative then reaction is exothermic and heat release in the surrounding.

In this one we are given enthalpy change for a certain process is -32 kJ/mol, so process is b) exothermic and heat will be released.

31) In this one we are given the combustion reaction of ethane and the standard enthalpies values of compounds.

Reaction - C2H4(g) + 3 O2(g) ------> 2 CO2(g) + 2 H2O(g)

We know the formula for the standard enthalpy of reaction as follow-

Horxn = Hof of product – Hof of reactant

= [ (2* Hof CO2(g)) + (2 Hof H2O(g) )] – [ Hof C2H4(g) + 3* Hof O2(g)]

= (2*-393.5 + 2*-285.9) – ( 52.3 + 3*0.00)

= -1411.1 kJ

So answer is b) -1411.1 kJ
