Question
The overall combustion reaction between glucose and oxygen is given below:
C6H12O6(s) + 6O2(g) --> 6CO2(g) + 6H2O(l) delta Hrxn = -2802.7 kj/mol
1. Will the oxygen gas in a 5.00L balloon, kept at 755 torr pressure and room temperature, 25 C, be sufficient to react with 10.0g of glucose?
2. What will the volume of carbon dioxide produced, assuming that the pressure and temperature are teh same as aove, and that the yield of the reaction is 85%?
3. How much heat will be given off by the reaction?
Explanation / Answer
1. In 10 g of no. of moles = mass/molar mass = 10/180 = 0.055
now let's calculate moles of oxygen
n = PV/RT =
P = 755/760 = 0.99 atm
V = 5 L
R = 0.082 atm*L/mol*K
T = 25 + 273 = 298K
therefore n = 0.203 moles
so yes, Oxygen in is excess to react with 10 g of glucose
2. since glucose is the limiting reagent, the moles of CO2 formed = (85/100) * 0.0555 = 0.047 moles
therefore V = nRT/P = 1.16L
3.from the equation we see for 1 mole heat released = -2802.7 kJ
so for 0.055 moles, energy released = -2802.7 X 0.055 = 155.55 kJ
