Question

The production capacity for acrylonitrile (C3H3N) in the United States is over 2 billion pounds per year. Acrylonitrile, the building block for polyacrylonitrile fibers and a variety of plastics, is produced from gaseous propylene, ammonia, and oxygen:

2C3H6(g) + 2NH3(g) + 3O2(g) 2C3H3N(g) + 6H2O(g)

Assuming 100% yield, determine the mass of acrylonitrile which can be produced from the mixture below:

a................. g = mass of acrylonitrile produced

b.What mass of water is formed from your mixture?

mass of water formed = ................... g

c.Calculate the mass (in grams) of each reactant after the reaction is complete:

Mass Reactant 4.84×102 g propylene 5.00 x 102 g ammonia 1.00 x 103 g oxygen

Explanation / Answer

a. if the yeild of the reaction is 100 % then qual mole of acetronitrile will fromed from the reactant propylene.

molecular weight of propylene = 42 g/ mole so, mole used = 11.75 mole

11.75 mole acetonitrile will fromed = 482.51 gm

b from 1 mole of propylene 3 mol of water will fromed so, water mole = 3* 11.75 = 35.25

mass = 634.5 gm

c.since 100 % yeild so propyleen = 0 gm

                       amonia used = 11.75 mole = 199.75

                                remaining = 310.25 gm

oxygen used :

                  1 mol reactant reacted with 1.5 mole oxygen

mole of oxygen = 17.62 = 564 gm

remaing oxygen = more xygen needed than 103 gm
